Apex Legends: Everything You Need to Know
Apex Legends is a brand new free-to-play battle royale from the Titanfall developers, Respawn Entertainment. It came out all of a sudden, completely free. In this article, we have collected you need to know about the new product – heroes, map, mechanics, and more. In the end, you will have everything you need to decide whether the game is worth giving a shot.
Players have perceived Apex Legends mostly well. Though, there are no full-fledged reviews yet. However, many have pointed out that both interaction with others and non-verbal communication are outstanding. If the project succeeds, it will definitely find its place on esports betting sites. Some gamers even claim that this project is an improved version of Black Ops 4: Blackout.
Unlike in some other battle royales, matches in Apex Legends are designed for 60 players, but not everyone plays solo. People are divided into 20 teams of three people. This is the game where you have to cooperate with your team, in order to claim the victory.
Although the action takes place in the Titanfall universe, there are no titans or wall running, features from the original game. According to the developers, these perks would have brought many balance issues. Though, the head of the studio said that there might be some experimenting in the future.
Apex Legends features a number of characters named legends. As in Overwatch or Rainbow Six: Siege, players get to choose one of them to play the match. Notably, two players in the same squad cannot play for the same legend.
All heroes have one passive ability, a tactical ability (which has a cooldown), and an ult, which charges rather slowly. Passive skill can be a quick run or improved protection, and tactical – smoke grenades, shields, invisibility, invulnerability, and so on.
As of now, there are 8 legends to choose from:
Bloodhound – tracks other players and sees through the walls;
Gibraltar – sets the dome shield and explodes bombs;
Lifeline – a medic who heals himself and allies with the help of a drone;
Bangalore – a soldier with special weapons, including an artillery attack;
Wraith – creates portals through which it can attack or retreat;
Pathfinder – a robot that is good at intelligence and can throw hooks;
Caustic – a sociopath with poison gas and traps;
Mirage – can fade and create holograms to confuse the enemy.
Just like in other games, each character has a unique set of skills, thus the gameplay varies dramatically. Respawn Entertainment assures that everyone will have a chance to find a Legend that would suit them most.
The map here is much smaller than in Fortnite and PUBG, but there are not so many players here – only 60. But there are a lot of underground passages so that you can escape from the battlefield. Some locations are real war zones, while others are as peaceful as your grandma’s backyard.
Players land on the map with bare hands and have to look for weapons like gamma pistols, machine guns, plasma and sniper rifles. You can also collect first-aid kits, armor, explosives body armor, and weapon upgrades.
Sometimes, the loot can be found on the ground. It can also be stored in large chests. Keep in mind that your bags have limited space, but you can always drop the unwanted loot, or exchange it with your party members.
As any free-to-play project, Apex Legends features lootboxes, which contain only skins and other miscellaneous things that do not affect the in-game balance.
The game has three types of currency: Apex Coins, Legend Tokens and Crafting Metals. The first is purchased for real money. Using it, you can buy lootboxes and other items like skins for heroes, weapons, replicas, and emotions.
One positive thing about lootboxes is that even if you fail to get the desired prize from 29 attempts, you will get it after the 30th one.
There are also two legends available for purchase, Caustic and Mirage. They are not op, just not like the rest. Notably, it is not necessary to spend money on them – everything can be obtained by simply playing the game. Unlocking them will take about 15 hours. Similarly, you can earn skins this way, too.
